DURHAM SCHOOL SERVICES HOSTS JOB SHADOWING FOR STUDENTS AT PFLUGERVILLE INDEPENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
Durham School Services welcomed five students from PISD to shadow staff members, allowing students to see first-hand what goes on in the workplace. R.E.A.L. World Pflugerville is PISD’s student job shadowing program. R.E.A.L. is an acronym standing for “relevant experiences achieve learning.”
The afternoon started off with a tour of Durham’s facility so the students could see real-time operations.
“Thanks to this trip, I now realize the importance of teamwork more than ever. It’s not until one gets to see it happen first hand that one understands,” wrote student Falvio Palaciosa, in a thank you note to Durham. “I especially liked how everyone seems to get along within this organization. It gives the work area purpose and a positive atmosphere. Such a firm mood appears to twine everyone together into a strong force, despite different cultural backgrounds. It’s essential to run almost any business or system effectively such as this one.”
After the tour, the students learned the job responsibilities of the dispatcher, mechanics, safety supervisor, bus driver and general manager. They even participated in the afternoon rollout by handing out keys to drivers.
“We wanted the students to observe everything that is related to the work that needs to be accomplished as part of the daily routine in these jobs,” said Will Adames, general manager at Durham. “What they experienced was how each position plays a significant role in how we make safety our number one priority.”
